If your approach to elegance comes with simplicity then an Italian inspired interior combined with modern design and edgy moody features, will afford you a space that is reminiscent of Milanese culture.
If you own a hospitality space anywhere in the world and want to enhance or rejuvenate with some everyday elegance, read on!
Seating
There is nothing more luxurious and comfortable than leather seating. Leather is durable and appealing and ideal for a hospitality setting, as it has a longer lifespan than fabric.
While the practicalities outweigh the higher upfront cost in most cases, the simple fact is it is an investment for your space and one that will last for decades. Which brings me to the only downside (because of its lifespan) it may potentially look outdated in years to come. A way to avoid this is to keep the lines simple and classic, and the colour less ostentatious.
Adding occasional chairs in a trendy commercial boucle or velvet fabric is not out of the question, and pairs beautifully with almost any leather upholstery.
Lighting And IIuminiation
Good functional lighting will make or break your hospitality space if it is not in proportion to the floorpan.
The three most important types of lighting include the following:
· Accent lighting ~ focuses light on a particular area.
· Functional and general lighting ~ illumination for the required space to function.
· Task lighting ~ reading light/tasks.
Mastering the right balance of general lighting and accent lighting is key when you are working with filtered light.
For practicality and style purposes, select fixtures like wall lights and oversized table lamps with subtle coloured shades, opting for geometric bases.
Although a glass chandelier will always make a solid impression, pendant lights are still overall effective and will punctuate your space.
Glass, brass, or black finishes are bold and coincide well with a high-end design. I see too often finishes dating quickly on light fixtures, so keep the vibe contemporary with some classic feels.
Classic Art
For a creative spin I want to leave behind any idea of a ‘snobby attitude’ here, and although classic art makes up a lot of luxe interiors, modernity will bring interest and appeal.
Did someone say abstract Art? Yes, I did. Although abstract art has been around longer than most of us realise, it may not be everyone’s notion of elegance, but it will certainly fit into a modern mid-century space.
With elements of colour and pattern, this type of art can essentially lift the mood of a room. Art work gives a room a sense of place, so choose carefully.
Soft Furnishings
With the inclusion of cushions, curtains and rugs, and various textile accessories used in hotels and homes, soft furnishings will always play a crucial role in interior decoration. Decorating with cushions is a clever way to bring a sofa to life and should harmonise with the rest of your soft furnishings, like window fittings and décor.
With so many options to choose from, if you want to create a luxurious feel to your space, stripes and borders will add a sophisticated feel, whilst still maintaining a distinct minimalist style. Moody hues work well with stripes, but so do caramels and browns.
Do remember the colour rule (60% colour, 30% secondary and 10% accent). This will guarantee you a clever and considered interior, making a unique style statement.
Rugs
A rug can be the hero piece if you want it to be, or not. It will most certainly bring a sense of warmth. Choosing a rug can be tricky, and it just depends on how much of a statement you wish to make with it.
If you want a rug for the simple purpose of underfoot comfort, then select a neutral hue with a simple design. However, if you want to rock the ambience, select one with mood enhancing patterns. Rugs are perfect for hospitality spaces, as they can be effective in breaking up different areas and zones.
Do not be afraid to try something a little out of the ordinary.
Conclusion
Unless you are governed by regulations making it challenging to modernise the area, you should open your mind by mixing different textiles and colour to achieve an exceptional Italian inspired interior.
