When I think of Art Deco I have a mental imagery of glossy period pieces, glass elements and geometric ornamentation in fabulous colours.
There is something intriguing about the 1920’s for me and one of my favoured style periods. It is a bewitching architectural design, often seen in historic homes all over the world and fast becoming a revival.
ADDING A MODERN TWIST
So, what if you want art deco with a modernistic feel? Then you have to think outside the square and avoid fads and trends when exploring a decadent design like art deco. This embellishing interior requires a good eye and some skill. A good interior decorator will nail the look by blending and combining 3-4 key pieces to achieve a nostalgic space with a cutting-edge contemporary base that will still stand the test of time. If it is done tastefully, it will always have a place in a well decorated home.
Adding straight smooth lines will soften the ‘traditional’ ornate furniture this style is known for. You can take out some of the embellishment to create a more subtle ‘present-day’ composition. When you rub shoulders with a timeless style such as this, you will not only change things up, but curate a space that is inimitable.
LIVING ROOM DECORATING ELEMENTS
For inspiration, start with a soft pile velvet sofa in a deep blue or grey. A velvet sofa is modern yet seamlessly holds an old-world charm. A rich colour lends itself perfectly when combining the right elements. Decorating with Artwork that has geometric shapes or curves is an excellent foundation. A Rug underfoot with a floral or geometric pattern is a must! Team it with a streamlined wooden square or round coffee table for the ‘latest’ look. A simplistic 'marble' coffee table is also on trend, yet still classic and the perfect companion.
A modern ceramic or concrete pendant light will create a focal point, or if you prefer a more demure feel, go for a traditional fixture like cut glass.
There is no mistake about it, Art deco is about layering, adding different textures and contrasting colour.
CUSHIONS PLAY A ROLE
Decorating with quality cushions is important and will play a big role in determining a particular style. As you walk into a well styled home, you can read a room by the the soft furnishings and the lay out. A strong pattern with a good strong colour way will speak volumes with this type of interior. If you prefer a little more of a feminine touch, florals and animal print cushions with neutral tones will add warmth and soften the look. I am loving the Emma J Shipley range at the moment, so fresh and chic, so don't be afraid to mix soft pastels with bold shades.
Decorating with an open mind and thinking outside the square will ensure you resonate with this dynamic interior style flourishing with a subtle 'newness' you will appreciate.
