Salt Living is a boutique store in an oceanfront location in Coolangatta, Queensland - a coast inspired collection of soft furnishings and bed linen are designed and produced by Jacinta Bishop. She focuses on a timeless style and environmentally mindful design and production. Salt Living also has an online store, a gateway for those who are not located in sunny Queensland.
What led you to start your own business?

I think intuition led me to start my own business, following my passion.

When did you open your coastal boutique retail store and why did you decide on the Coolangatta oceanfront location?

We first opened Salt Living in May of 2015, I was already living in Coolangatta at the time, and had already fallen in-love with its beautiful beaches and year-round holiday vibe.

How did you come up with the name ‘Salt Living' ?

I wanted to come up with a name that referenced both my love of the beach, and my love of interiors.

How would you describe your brand’s style aesthetically speaking?

A little bit coastal beach house, a little bit country cottage and quite timeless.

You have a beautiful range of linen products, ranging from duvet covers to sheets and cushions, are these the main elements of your online store?

Absolutely, our bed linen is our main offering, though we also sell other homewares like table linen and cushions.

How has Salt Living evolved since 2015?

Our shop has done a full circle from opening in 2015, then expanding into a larger store n 2017, to then down-sizing in 2020 due the pandemic related border closures etc. We have always been focused on homewares, though the last few years we’ve arrowed down even more into our niche of bedlinen.

How long have you had an online store and warehouse?

We’ve been selling online for about 8 years, and have always had small storage units, however the past 2 years we’ve needed to expand into the warehouse space we’re currently in.

Do you design and produce your own product line of soft furnishings and is your exclusive linen range designed in Australia?

Yes, all of our Salt Living products are designed by myself, then produced by our manufacturing partners in China and Turkey. We also stock a couple of other brands like Walter G and more in-store.

How does Salt Living contribute to minimise environmental footprint?

All our products are packaged in reusable linen pouches, rather than plastic. Our courier satchels are made of recycled material and are recyclable. We also produce in quite small batches, according to our customer demand, so as never to overproduce anything.

When you are not working at the boutique or warehouse, how do you spend your time?

When I’m not working I’m hanging out with my toddler. On my days off we are always at the beach, or places like Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Seaworld or Wet n Wild.

What inspires you and what is the vision for the future for Salt Living?

I am really inspired by other interior designers, or anyone who is living their best authentic life creating art or whatever makes them happy. My vision for Salt Living is to continue growing and developing our own signature style. I’d love to expand my collection into printed linen fabrics from which we could launch a wider range of products in addition to our bedlinen. Designing products like curtains, lampshades, wallpaper, beautiful things like that. These are long-term goals; however, I never want to rush anything. I prefer to let my creativity and brand evolve naturally at its own pace.

Jacinta, thank you so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to do this interview with me and to share your story.
I hope to inspire my readers to visit your boutique store to experience your designer bed linen and and soft furnishings in person, or online ~ Marina Mura
