Hamptons style is inspired by the ocean side and coastal homes of Long Island, New York, known as the Hamptons. It has a laid-back yet elegant approach and it’s no wonder it keeps showing up in interior design all around the globe.
This successful interior design can capture a blend of classic and casual coastal vibes with some serious luxe feels. It goes straight to number one for effortlessly welcoming the outdoors in, with a relaxed timeless appeal.
Branching out with nautical accents, textured linens and balancing contrasting hues of bold blues, bright whites, neutrals, and even black will breathe new air into your Hamptons-space. This well-established style can lift your mood, giving you a sense of place and arguably maintain life’s simple pleasures, all within an airy, breezy interior.
Modern Hamptons Bedroom
The essence of rest is more necessary today than ever before and creating a Hamptons bedroom with a difference and modernity to it, whilst keeping the traditional elements, will mean no hard and fast rules.
· The finer details are important if you want to make an impression. Consider unique and unexpected touches with a plethora of colour options. Think outside the square whilst maintaining the original concept. Get moody, it doesn’t have to be all about bright whites.
· Create your own personal space, feeling your way with a carefully curated selection of cushions and plush comforters to highlight and define your bed linens. A splash of colour like turquoise is not out of the question, although it would be considered more ‘Australian beachy’ to do so.
· Create texture to enhance your surroundings. If you have a thing for simplicity and neutral decor, contemplate a neutral floor rug in a heavy rustic weave to set your seaside tone, bringing a sense of individuality even with the most minimalistic bed linens and homewares, and can be the perfect union.
· Re-imagine your bedroom with classic coastal aesthetics that suit the theme of Hamptons, coastal, or beach house. Introducing paddle boards or oars, anchor bells or boat bits, will bring an unexpected association to your coastal interior.
· An oversized ivory linen armchair (or leather for a more masculine feel) will embrace everything Hamptons. However, if you want something a little less traditional, a leather armchair in caramel with biscuit tufting and round bolsters can offer a fresh perspective for that ‘difference’ you may be pursuing.
· Voyage into nautical or beach themes with a stand out piece of art on topic with your bedroom story and hues which complement your interior scheme. Keep it simple, or make it the hero piece, you decide!
· Hamptons-style can be penchant for circular themes, but as I said there are no rules when you are trying to move away a from the standard approach for your home interior. Just make sure you keep the space connected to the rest of the home’s interior space.
· The colour ways need to remain the same and adding touches here and there to form interest and contrast is important. Just ensure you have the colour rule under check with the 60-30-10 allocation. If you favour neutral palettes, ensure you have a bit of a bold hue to easily link it together.
Don’t Forget Your Wood.
Soft oak wood is the timber choice for most designers and architects when it comes to Hamptons style. Starting from the floor up it will feel right in any space, especially if you want to discreetly soften bold and crisp interiors. An oak bedside table and matching bedhead will lend itself to organic elements and marry up well with a treasure trove of Hamptons finishes.
· Kids bedrooms styled in a Hamptons theme will give you loads of options and fun. Consider pastel blue, pinks, or muted terracotta’s. Be sure to start off with a good solid timber bed. Furnish with a playful rug in a stripe or pattern. Throw in an ornate round wall mirror and complementing lamp with a pinch pleat shade for a soft finishing touch. For a really whimsical bedroom, a mural on a wall can enhance a child's sleep and make them feel happy and relaxed. A sea life mural or a wallpaper depicting ocean swells would be even better, and you may just find your little darlings will never want to leave their bedrooms. Unless they are off fishing or beaching it that is!
Using Wallpapering and Murals
Wallpapers reflect so many different periods of time and beautify your walls in a way paint just cannot match. Wallpaper is also more eco-friendly than some paints.
With a popular re-entry in the design world (boy am I glad) you can easily make your sanctuary personal and intensely ‘Hamptons’ whilst adopting a whimsical feel. If you are considering a wallpaper or a mural, note that there is a difference. Wallpaper is embossed or a surface print, it can be removable or pasted down (will last longer for those who are looking for a long-term style). Removable wallpaper will only last 2-3 years.
Wall murals however, are digital prints from high quality photography and are a fabulous way to take your bedroom design to another level or and really lift your interior.
Conclusion
Taking time-out is important and doing so in a bedroom that makes you want to embrace the day first thing in the morning, and let go of it at the end of the day, will ultimately depend on your design choices and surroundings. Just ensure you localise the look and make it your own!
