Co-ordinating lighting to create a balance that correlates with your interior design is a must to ensure the prefect illumination for your home.
Let me start with the following no fail elements:
· Accent (to focus light on a particular object).
· Ambience (to set the tone for your space).
· Task (for concentrated light when reading or food preparation).
A Table Lamp
To create a polished look, consider table lamps in varying sizes to scatter light and ambience in every corner.
Table lamps should complement each other and marry up via colour or texture. In addition, and without exception, include at least one console table essentially just for effect. If the console table is sizeable then decorate with quality twin matching table lamps on either side (one-third the height of the table shade included) this works lucidly in making a statement in either an entry, hallway or behind a sofa, ensuing a purposeful ambience.
A Chandelier
A chandelier is suspended from the ceiling with multiple bulbs incorporated into one fixture creating a cascading elegance. A chandelier is often seen in expansive homes, entrances and foyers. It is a sign of grandness and sometimes liken to a theatrical production. Some designs can appear almost fanciful and may not be for everyone. It really depends on your taste (and budget) so perhaps not for the minimalists.
A Pendant Light
Pendant lighting is a superb way to create a focal point. With just one bulb this type of fixture is often seen over head of a kitchen island bench or dining table. Group pendants with two or three, or even different dimensions for an inimitable style.
Even though a single pendant light is the original protagonist and a good option for smaller spaces, think about a clustered vibe for an elaborate dining experience.
There are endless options for pendants, as they can be considered a task, ambient or accent lighting, so quite versatile and adaptable in comparison to a chandelier.
Pendants usually come with a retractable cord so you can position them as you wish.
A Wall Sconce
All you need is some clever design skills to pull off a wall sconce in a modern interior design. They add so much value in terms of functionality.
Hang above bedside tables for a clutter free solution, leaving ample room for your electronic devices. Ensure the switch is easily accessible from a sitting position in bed.
A wall sconce can light up a hallway in a discreet manner or accentuate a work of art effectively.
Accent Lighting For Soft Intervention
Do you have a particular work of art to highlight, elevate or draw attention to. Accent lighting can be visually appealing even on its own. It can take the form of a wall sconce, wall light, track or down light where it is needed (remember your dimmers).
Obviously, it is important to factor in where you place your accent lighting and how you are going to layer it with the overall scheme. This is why encompassing both interior design and your lighting is equally important.
The beauty about accent lighting is that it doesn’t stop just in the interior of your home, as we know it is widely used in an exterior, for example around landscaping, pools, entertainment and alfresco areas.
Overall your fixtures should carefully tackle the issue of not enough light or ‘too’ much for a liveable home.
